The
Various Ingredients of a Recipe for a Great Room

The interior design journey is ongoing. Constant refinement of
the room, its elements and its design yield a living space that
is both comforting and aesthetically pleasing. Consider the following
questions about design elements:
- What will the room be used for?
What emotion should the room portray? Reverent with light colors
and neutrals or bold and active with primary colors and linear
grids?
- What shape does the room have?
Is there a natural focal point that would be best enhanced or
subdued?
- Does the layout of objects in
the room work well with the traffic flow or is it intended to
segment traffic and create coziness?
- Do radial or symmetric patterns
work in the room? Repeating patterns can make a room look smaller,
while sparse use of texture can open up a space and create visual
rhythm.
- Texture in carpet, wall paper,
paint and furniture can give the room more depth. Too much texture
can overwhelm the viewer and detract from items of interest like
paintings.
