The Various Ingredients of a Recipe for a Great Room

How much do you know about the use of color or pattern and texture? Test your knowledge and skills while picking up design tips along the way with the links to the left.

The interior design journey is ongoing. Constant refinement of the room, its elements and its design yield a living space that is both comforting and aesthetically pleasing. Consider the following questions about design elements:
  • What will the room be used for? What emotion should the room portray? Reverent with light colors and neutrals or bold and active with primary colors and linear grids?
  • What shape does the room have? Is there a natural focal point that would be best enhanced or subdued?
  • Does the layout of objects in the room work well with the traffic flow or is it intended to segment traffic and create coziness?
  • Do radial or symmetric patterns work in the room? Repeating patterns can make a room look smaller, while sparse use of texture can open up a space and create visual rhythm.
  • Texture in carpet, wall paper, paint and furniture can give the room more depth. Too much texture can overwhelm the viewer and detract from items of interest like paintings.
