Design Examples / Country / Family Room

This family room portrays good old fashioned traditional country design and nostalgia with antiques including the table, wood chairs, wood bowl on table, dry food basin with 3/4 inch glass top, wind vane, stone mantle and candle stick holders. The strong wood tones, some having deep rich antique finishes, combine to speak of earlier times when craftsmanship was paramount. Complimenting secondary patterns in the corner chair, pillows, foot rest, persian rug and event the pattern of the stone on the mantle give a soft touch and visual harmony without clutter. The general color scheme of neutrals and warm colors enclose the space and invite the occupant to pull up a good book and enjoy a crackling fire. Visit our color themes, schemes and theory page for additional information about warm colors and the psychological impact of color.

Table: Antique beech wood painted a muted green with pleny of knicks, dents and character.

Chair Set: Antique handcrafted large back dining chairs are very sturdy and feature the deep rich finish that only decades of use can create.

Wall Paint: Egg shell white with white washed pine for the ceiling and subdued paste-green shelving.

Flooring: Oak plank flooring with several coats of polyeurethane and polished to a high gloss breathes the warmth of life into this otherwise cold space.

Accessories: Old fashioned clock, weather vane, antique tooth pick dispenser, butter vat churning stick to the left of the mantle, chariscurro oil paintings left of the window with a cracked glazed finish and coffee table that once was used for storing dry foods. These all speak of an earlier time of hard labor, fine manual wood working skills and an emphasis on daily life.

Window dressings: The window grid simulating small glass panes of the early American West and minimalistic curtain rod throw out eccentric in favor of simplistic solid values.

Framed Art: Many of the antique paintings show their years in the canvas and by the patina of the picture frame. It is these attentions to detail that transform a room into a work of art.

Lighting: Elegant traditional brass chandelier with simulated candle lights reinforces the country theme.
