Safety tips
for working with power tools
Cover Your Assets
When working with any tool, make sure to follow recommended manufacturer's
directions. Consider a protective outer layer consisting of full
shield goggles, clothing that doesn't hang or dangle loosely,
leather gloves, a hard hat, and steel-toed work boots.
Tool Inspection
Safety guards for all tools should be in place and operable.
Tool maintenance like keeping a saw blade from becoming dull,
will also help to prevent disaster. If a tool is damaged or not
operating properly, replace it.
Correct Tool Use
When using a miter saw or saw and miter box, pay close attention
and possibly hold wood in place with a quick-release clamp. When
using a table saw to rip, be sure to use a wood push-through
to keep fingers away from the blades. If a drill bit binds to
the material being drilled, the drill can flip around, potentially
causing harm. This is especially true when drilling metal. Nail
guns must be handled with extreme care. If a nail hits solid
material, the gun can kick back, which could cause it to nail
into something else including the person using the gun. Power
belt sanders have a tendency to 'run away' due to the fast motion
of the belt. Be sure to keep a firm grip with both hands at all
times. |
